Polio is a serious infectious disease of the nerves in the spine , and mainly affects children under five years of age.
The virus is spread person to person, typically through contaminated water. It can attack the nervous system, and in some instances, lead to paralysis. Although there is no cure, but polio is preventable with the vaccine.
Polio is always present in some particular places and group of people. To end polio, we must decrease transmission of the virus in the three main countries Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan.
We should keep all other countries polio-free until we ensure it won’t resurface. Up to 60 high-risk countries still operate immunization campaigns in large scale to protect children against polio.
Within 10 years there are as many as 200,000 new cases each year, all over the world. Unless we reach every child with the vaccine and end polio forever, no child anywhere is safe. So to build a better world for children, the ending polio program we need to persist if we could.
