America’s First Intelligence Agency

All of us are familiar with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), highly impressed with talented agents and their wisdom. But maybe we don’t know about its history, here we are talking about the predecessor of CIA.

The Office of Strategic Services (OSS) as the predecessor of CIA, was formed during World War II as a wartime intelligence agency of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS). It’s mainly functions are to organize espionage activities behind enemy lines for all branches of the United States Armed Forces. Other OSS functions included the use of propaganda, subversion, and post-war planning. While the idea of an American intelligence agency existed, there wasn’t a coordinated direction overall.
